Program Details

Pre-CanSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills
No previous experience required, recommended for children aged 3 and older.  CSA approved helmets are mandtory. Group Lessons (1 half-hour lesson provided per week)

Eight skills are required to pass Pre-CanSkate in order to move onto CanSkate.  At the end of Pre-CanSkate skaters will receive their Pre-CanSkate ribbon.

  1. Balancing on two feet
  2. Falling down and getting up
  3. Moving Forward
  4. Moving Backwards
  5. Marching on the spot
  6. Making Snow
  7. Jumping on the spot
  8. Two foot twists on the spot

CanSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills Evaluation
All new skaters will be assessed by the coaching staff and placed into the most appropriate program within the 1st week of skating.  CSA approved helmets are mandatory.  Group lessons (1 hour/night, 1 night/week)

There are 6 stages in CanSkate, with 3 fundamentals in each stage.  The fundamentals are;

  1. Balance: Concentrating on forward skills, pushing technique and edges
  2. Control: Concentrating on backward skills, stopping and speed elements.
  3. Agility: Concentrating on turning and jumping skills.

Each skater must pass all 3 fundamentals in order to move on to the next stage

Each time a fundamental skill is mastered, the skater is awarded a ribbon.  Once all three ribbons in that level are mastered a badge is awarded.

JR StarSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills
This program is by invitation only, and is offered to skaters that have passed a higher level of CanSkate. CSA helmets are mandatory. Group lessons. Private lessons are strongly recommended.
Ice dancing, free-skate and interpretive dance are worked on along with the remaining CanSkate skills

StarSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills Evaluation
Skaters must have passed stage 5, and be working on stage 6 of the CanSkate Program.  Group lessons for free skate, dance, skills and stroking with Club Coach.  Individual non-coached time begins at this level.  Private lessons are strongly recommended at this time. 

Skating Skills: a combination of fundamental skating movements, executed on a pattern and skated solo.  The basic components of all disciplines of figure skating are incorporated into the program.  The objective of the Skating Skills program is mastery of the basic fundamentals of skating- edge quality, control, power and speed.

Ice Dance: the execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements and stroking performed in sequence to music.

Interpretive: encourages and develops skaters creativity, expression, movement and interpretation of the music. 

 

 Skaters are tested in each discipline to progress through sequential levels.

Skating Skills: preliminary, junior bronze, senior bronze, junior silver, senior silver, gold.

Ice Dance: preliminary, junior bronze, senior bronze, junior silver, senior silver, gold, diamond. 

Free Skate:  preliminary, junior bronze, senior bronze, junior silver, senior silver, gold. 

Interpretive: introductory, bronze, silver, gold.

Advanced StarSkate

Prerequisites Lesson Format Skills Evaluation
Skaters must have passed at least TWO of the following; Junior Bronze dance, preliminary skills, and/or preliminary freeskate. Group lessons for free skate, dance, skills and stroking with Club Coach.  Individual non-coached time begins at this level.  Private lessons are strongly recommended at this time.
